What is a Podiatrist?
Podiatrist is a foot doctor. When I say that, most of the people say “Foot doctor? Why would you want to be a foot doctor? It is a foot, it does not need a doctor?” Well it is not true. If they know that we can walk 10,000 to 18,000 steps in a day and we do enough walking in our entire life to walk around the globe 4 times. Each time we step on our feet, the pressure going through our feet is 3 times higher than our body weight. That makes our feet to be the most abused part of our body.
When was the last time you went to a doctor because your nails look funny or there is pain on your heel? Most of us think that funny looking nail will grow out or my feet hurt because I have been standing on them all day long. Well, it might be the true, but what if it is not ? What if that funny looking nail is caused by melanoma or skin tumor which may be fatal to someone’s life? What if that heel pain is due to something more big than you think like plantar fasciitis?
Podiatrists can save life as much as other physicians can do. Most of the symptoms of diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure. etc) can start from our feet and going to podiatrist might save your life.
I think podiatry is the only health care specialist that a patient who walked in with pain, walks out without pain with a big smile, not only because they don’t have the pain anymore, it is because they have been treated by a nice doctor who makes their selves important.
If you don’t care about yourselves please care about your feet and take good care of them. You are the only one who can take care of them and they are the only one who can take care of you. You need them as much as they need you. Just close your eyes and think about it, what if you don’t have your feet? Would you be able to go to park with your dog and walk? Would you be able to drive that car you spent $50,000? Would you be able to run after your baby? Just think about it.
